This new plan from the innovative Medex Protect is designed to reimburse employers the £88.45 a week they pay as Statutory Sick Pay for 27 of the 28 weeks that the benefit is paid. The benefit starts to be paid from day seven of the employee’s period off sick.
In addition to this, the plan also pays for up to two private GP consultations per employee per annum. These are delivered face-to-face by the Dr.Now secure app.
Other features include telephone consultations with specialist occupational health nurses, with detailed reports and advice provided to the employer. There is an employee assistance programme, face-to-face consultations with occupational health physicians (again with reports provided to the employer), a pre-commencement screen for every new employee and an occupational health helpline.
Additional risk management tools cover night workers, expectant mothers, musculoskeletal conditions (in the form of a risk assessment) and screen equipment (equipment assessment).
The plan costs £10 per employee per month.
What They Say
Director Jason Dunks said: “We have put together a new low cost insurance plan, which provides comprehensive absence management protection as well as sick pay insurance. Quality occupational health is ordinarily both difficult to find and expensive to purchase. Medex Protect will provide effective absence management and if we are unable to get the employee back to work within seven days, we will put our money where their mouth is and fund the SSP up to the end of week 28 of the absence.”
What We Say
"The Government introduced changes to SSP from April 2014. Since that time, employers have not been able to recover their SSP costs so, if an employee cannot work, this creates an immediate financial cost. In addition, many firms are poor at absence management.
"This plan aims to meet both needs, in a simple to buy and understand package that costs just £10 a month for each employee covered. Even there, firms now get a £2,000 a year allowance to offset against their NIC bill so in effect, a firm with say ten employees could pay £120 a year for each for this plan (total cost £1,200), and still get change from its £2,000 Employment Allowance. Of course, it may already be spending that on other things, but even so, the plan looks to offer good value.
"In addition to the financial benefit, Medex Protect has built-in some useful practical absence management solutions. That alone can save considerable costs as well as helping SMEs run their businesses more efficiently.
"It’s a very innovate solution that could appeal to a lot of smaller employers."
