GuideWell is a private medical insurance product for large employers, which uses an open referral pathway to manage claims costs and deliver sustainable and competitive pricing, with a promise of no shortfalls on hospital charges or specialist fees for employees.
Following referral by their GP, employees will have their treatment directed through Aviva. Those with musculoskeletal problems will be managed through Aviva’s BacktoBetter rehabilitation service. All appointments will be close to either work or home at one of over 250 hospitals. In most cases the appointment will be within 20 miles of their given postcode (10 miles in London). Specialists are chosen by Aviva using its ‘comprehensive specialist finder database, which combines the insurer’s extensive claims experience with independent external data’. Where multiple specialists could equally undertake the appointment, a choice of specialists is given. Specialists will have undertaken the same type of procedure at least three times for Aviva in the previous two years.
GuideWell is available alongside Aviva’s existing large corporate plan, Optimum, which continues to be offered.
What They Say
Medical director Dr Doug Wright said: “GuideWell has been crafted to deliver benefits that we know our clients, members and intermediaries will value. As open referral helps manage costs as well as quality, it means that some large companies will benefit from competitive pricing upfront, making the provision of this employee benefit much more sustainable over time.”
What We Say
"Open referral remains a controversial issue, but where it is adopted, insurers need to ensure it offers more than just the potential to save money. Aviva has gone some way to achieving this, taking note of patient preferences as researched by the Competition Commission [location and all fees being covered being their expressed key priorities]. A focus on geography, quality and frequency considerations has the potential to improve most people’s treatment experience and, if that delivers sustainable competitive pricing, it should be a win/win situation.
"If your corporate clients are still not convinced of the arguments, Aviva’s Optimum plan is an alternative for those that want it."
