Cigna’s latest offering is a range of international private medical insurance (iPMI) plans aimed at rig workers in the oil and gas sector. As Cigna points out, this group of workers have completely different working and living conditions to the average expatriate worker.
There are three cover levels – Core, Advanced and Ultra. Energy Ultra and Energy Advanced pay up to £1m a year and Energy Core pays up to £750,000 a year (or US Dollar or Euro equivalents). There are annual limits on some benefits e.g. consultations, prescribed medicines and congenital conditions.
Chronic conditions are covered as standard on all plans (and treatment costs paid in full) and pre-existing conditions are also covered where the group consists of more than 10 employees. In-patient, out-patient and scans are all paid in full.
The plans have two geographic pricing areas – both are worldwide, but the lower price one excludes the USA. Pricing is targeted at the specialised needs and claims experience of the market. As well as covering rig workers, dependants can also be added at extra cost.
The two more expensive plans also include emergency dental treatment up to £500 a year. Dental Extra cover can be added to pay for other dental costs up to £1,250 a year or Dental Extra Plus to pay up to £2,500 a year. Vision Extra can also be added, to pay for an eye examination and other optical costs up to £135 a year. Only Energy Ultra includes pregnancy-related treatment.
As a key need is for medical evacuation coverage for employees in remote (and often hostile) locations, the plans includes that, and integrates with the employer’s own offshore emergency evacuation facilities to provide a seamless solution. That is important as working in the North Sea, say, means that conventional ambulances and evacuation processes are not available or practical.
The plan also includes access to 24/7/365 multi-lingual medical support teams.
What They Say
Regional sales director, Europe, Mark Coleman, said: “Cigna’s Energy Plans offer medical evacuation coverage for employees in remote locations, and have been specifically developed to integrate with a company’s own offshore emergency evacuation facilities to provide a seamless solution for employers and their employees. In addition, our fully integrated evacuation and direct settlement approach manages and coordinates every aspect of any medical situation, completely behind the scenes. This alleviates the administrative and financial burden on employers and offers complete peace of mind.”
What We Say
"Cigna has been particularly busy of late, with a range of new product launches. This plan targets a very limited market but an important one, and one where health and safety are very real issues for workers and employers alike.
"Cigna has developed an approach based on analysing what the market needs, and then delivering it, within a framework that can offer cover choices to meet individual needs. Importantly the crucial evacuation cover is designed to fit with the employer’s existing arrangements, so helping avoid problems if or when a claim arises."
