This is an annual or per trip travel insurance policy with no upper age limit for single trips.
All destinations are covered, and individuals up to an entire travelling party can be covered under the same policy. Cover can also be provided at low cost for a travelling companion (whose own policy may not pay out if their holiday is curtailed or costs are incurred due to their companion’s illness). The policy is ideal for older travellers and those with an existing medical condition. The application process is online, with a quote time of 6-7 minutes, including medical screening (which uses a plain English question set).
All medical conditions can be considered – the only exception being anyone travelling against their doctors’ orders. So, for example, someone currently receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy can still be considered.
There are no standard premium rates, as each application is considered on its merits. Premiums are paid online using a credit or debit card. Commission is 20%, or 10% if the call centre is used.
Cover is fairly standard for this type of policy, as are the exclusions (including for hazardous pursuits). Some benefits include limits or have built-in excesses too. Medical expenses up to £5m are covered and personal public liability up to £2m. The policy even includes hole in one golf cover of £100.
What They Say
AMII chairman Andrew Tripp said: “This is a really exciting added value policy for our members to offer. How often do we hear of somebody complaining that they can’t get travel insurance because of this condition or that condition or an exclusion applies? Now, a lot more people will be able to get peace of mind and access to a valuable travel insurance if they go to an AMII member, all of who are specialised independent private medical insurance advisers and understand the medical issues involved.”
What We Say
"Too many people travel abroad with no travel insurance, some of those because they have an existing medical condition or are elderly. This plan is designed to meet their needs, and is also a valuable extra service for AMII members to offer their clients. In fact, AMII members are probably particularly well placed to understand the risks of not having medical insurance, whether abroad or at home.
"The application process is simple and most medical conditions can be considered. Shopping around can be worthwhile, although that can often involve long time delays if specialist questionnaires and medical information checks are needed."
