The proportion of residential care homes in the UK in the independent sector has risen, according to the latest statistics from the Department of Health.
The independent sector now provides 88% of all residential and nursing care homes in the UK. This figure has risen by 6% in the last two years.
The total number of places available in care homes, in both local authority and independent sector has increased by 11%. There were 307,900 places in 23,100 residential care homes, including small homes; 131,700 places in 4,000 nursing care homes and 73,600 places in 1,500 homes which were dual registered.
