Consumers do not know the true cost of operations and procedures, according to the latest research from Standard Life Healthcare.
Almost six out of ten people underestimate the cost of a heart operation and just three in ten people know the cost of an MRI scan.
The research also asked people to rate various selected benefits of a private medical insurance (PMI) policy. Fifty-six per cent gave the highest rating to an information service that could help them find out hospital costs.
And fifty-one percent put parental accommodation top of the list.
Standard Life Healthcare managing director Mike Hall said: “The lack of knowledge of costs can mean that many people are unprepared for the realities of paying for healthcare without the protection of some PMI cover.”
