Primary Care Groups will play a key role in restoring public confidence in the NHS, said health minister Alan Milburn.
Speaking at the Future of Commissioning. Beyond Fundholding
, conference, Milburn said guidance on the formation of Primary Care Groups would be issued soon.
He emphasised GPs would not have Primary Care Groups forced upon them: “When we said that family doctors and community nurses were going to be in the driving seat, we meant it. This is not going to be a return to the late 1970’s command-and-control model. But nor is it a continuation of the market free-for-all of the early 1990s.”
He added: “A Primary Care Group must command public confidence, and that means involving everyone in deciding how it is made up.”
