NHS staff are set to be offered a lucrative long-term pay deal with some workers getting more than the 40% originally demanded by striking firefighters. The Agenda for Change proposals, which should revolutionise health service working practices, will eventually add around £4bn a year to the Government’s pay bill. Alan Milburn, the health secretary, has told unions he is prepared to offer a million NHS staff an across-the-board 10% wage rise over three years.
A Health Department spokesman said: “Agenda for Change is about new ways of working linked to fair levels of pay. The outcome should sweep away old-fashioned demarcations and improve the overall product of the NHS.”
