A mandatory retirement age is at odds with the age discrimination legislation that will come into force in 2006, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
The CIPD wants a more progressive approach to the employment of older workers.
CIPD adviser of diversity, Dianah Worman, said: “Many organisations are still stuck in a mindset that older workers are “past it”.
