AIG Europe is the latest insurer to launch a managed care programme aimed at getting employees back to work as quickly as possible after an injury.
The “accel” risk management programme brings a “new approach” to employers’ liability insurance, according to AIG Europe’s director Steve Eckhardt.
He says: “Accel’s proactive approach to handling accidents and injuries at work will be of benefit to all parties involved. Trials have indicated that this programme can cut claims by as much as 20%.”
For employers Accel should reduce the cost of accidents at work, and for injured employees this managed care programme should provide improved chances of rehabilitation, financial and psychological recovery and retraining where necessary. The benefit for the insurer lies in the reduction in claims costs that is likely as a result of the scheme.
Statistics from the Clinical Standards Advisory Group Report in 1994 show that after six months off due to injury, claimants have only a 50% chance of returning to their job.
Under this new scheme, employees injured at work are monitored by a Registered General Nurse to ensure they receive the right treatment to return to work as quickly as possible.
It is also thought that this approach will reduce the amount spent on legal fees in employers’ liability disputes as cases are more likely to be settled amicably. All clients buying into this scheme will receive a risk management software package, Intellirisk, which provides comprehensive claims information enabling immediate risk assessment and cost control.
