Cash plan provider Forester Health is the first provider to sign up to a new medical assessment and prescription drug advice line.
Available at no extra cost to the policyholder, the service is provided by Europe Assistance.
It offers live access to practising medical professionals 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. It also provides full medical assessments for every known illness and injury and has stress counselling for psychological problems.
If necessary, referrals will be made to the caller’s GP or PMI provider, backed by written case records should further treatment be needed.
The prescription drug advice line allows policyholders to find out about side effects, what medicines can be safety combined and which are available from overseas chemists.
A spokeswoman for Forester Health said in its first three weeks of being made available, the helpline had received some 1,630 calls.
The helpline was initially created by King’s College Hospital, London, then subsequently transferred to Europe Assistance.
