Protection specialist Scottish Provident has produced a free consumer guide explaining the issues involved in mortgage protection.
The move comes in response to results from a recent survey commissioned by the company, highlighting a major lack of this form of protection among UK residents.
The survey also revealed that around a quarter of people without mortgage protection could not say why they had not taken out the cover.
Written in plain English, the guide is designed to give consumers a simple introduction to mortgages and choosing the right protection.
It describes the main types of cover available in this area, including critical illness cover, disability cover term assurance and unemployment benefit.
Scottish Provident head of product marketing John Hay said: “One reason people find themselves without mortgage protection is that, faced with a confusing range of products, they don’t understand what cover they should take out.
“We appreciate that protection can be a complex issue and this is where sound advice plays a vital role.
“An independent financial adviser will be able to suggest the best type of mortgage protection for individuals whether it is for a new mortgage or to protect an existing one.”
