Tony Blair has announced that six new NHS hospitals are to be built. The combined total cost of the hospitals is almost £650m.
They will be built in Leeds, Oxford, Havering, Portsmouth, Blackburn and Derby. They will be funded by the third wave of the Private Finance Initiative.
Blair said: “This government was elected to modernise the NHS. That is what we are doing, but it will take time. We are delivering on reducing waiting lists, and we are committed to making the NHS more convenient through initiatives such as NHS Direct.”
