AXA PPP NAMES INTERMEDIARY BOSS
Nick Groom has been appointed distribution director of AXA PPP healthcare, with responsibility for intermediated and corporate business as well as for AXA UK’s health and wellbeing support business, AXA ICAS. Groom (pictured) succeeds Chris Horlick, who leaves AXA PPP to pursue a new career outside of the healthcare industry. He joins AXA PPP from AXA Life, where he has worked since 2003, serving most recently as distribution and marketing director for its corporate business. In a move described as “complementary” by AXA PPP, Mark Howes, managing director of Sun Life Direct, is taking on the additional responsibility of leading acquisition and retention for AXA PPP’s direct personal business. The appointment of Howes would enable the healthcare business to build on his expertise in “consumer direct distribution”, AXA PPP said.
PMI HEALTH GROUP PHYSIOTHERAPIST
PMI Health Group, the independently-owned specialist provider of employee healthcare and risk management services, has appointed its first physiotherapist. Mary Watson will handle musculoskeletal queries from clients’ employees within the group’s nurse-led claims management team, Managed Care. Watson joins the group after retiring from her position as superintendent at Northwich Infirmary, Cheshire, where she worked for more than 20 years.
GROUPAMA TRAINING MANAGER
Groupama Insurances has appointed Louise Lock to the newly created role of learning and development manager. She will be responsible for designing and delivering learning solutions for managers and employees at all levels within Groupama Insurances. She will report to HR business partner Mark Dickinson. An internal appointment, she previously worked for Zurich Financial Services.
VANBREDA HEAD OF PROVIDER RELATIONS
Vanbreda International, the provider of international Health Insurance and employee benefits, has appointed Joris Smets as the new head of its provider relations department. Smets will become responsible for managing, extending and improving the company’s network of inpatient and outpatient healthcare providers. Prior to joining Vanbreda International, he worked for a non-governmental organisation in West Africa.
HEALIX SALES & MARKETING BOSS
Healix Group, the international medical assistance and healthcare services provider and administrator, has appointed a new sales and marketing director. Steve Hook, formerly director responsible for the Corporate & Travel sector for Mondial Assistance, has already taken up the new role and is spearheading an “ambitious programme of initiatives to raise the profile of the Healix Group”, the organisation said.
XAFINITY SALES DIRECTOR
Lyndon Jones has been appointed sales director of Xafinity Consulting. Having begun his career as a consulting actuary, Lyndon started his own business in the 1990s, which was subsequently bought by a major plc. Lyndon then became head of Hazell Carr’s Defined Benefit business, which Xafinity acquired in April 2008. In his new role, he will develop and lead Xafinity’s national sales team and be involved in product and business development.

Bupa Individual Protection has appointed Kevin Russ as technical services consultant. Russ joins the product development team at Bupa Individual Protection from Vertex Financial services where he has been working with a range of product providers on both life and pensions technical issues.
AXA ICAS MAN NAMED EAP ASSOCIATION CHAIR
AXA ICAS business manager Eugene Farrell has been elected chairman of the UK branch of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA). EAPA is a global organisation dedicated to advancing the interests and furthering the development of employee assistance professionals and Farrell has served as its deputy chair since 2007. A qualified health economist, he has over twenty years of experience in the UK healthcare arena and has worked in a variety of roles in both the public and private sectors.
FIRSTASSIST REHAB SPECIALISTS
FirstAssist, the health and wellbeing provider, has announced several key appointments at its rehabilitation business, to support its new, dedicated Rehabilitation Service Centre based at its Purley head office. Jerrot Sawden has been named head of operations, having previously worked for AXA PPP healthcare. Jo Ellender has been appointed as clinical supervisor, having previously worked for Kynixa and PruHealth. Gillian Lourens joins as team manager for clinical operations, from AXA Assistance. Sherrill Prideaux has been appointed operations manager, having previously spent eight years at AXA ICAS Health & Wellbeing. FirstAssist has also appointed a further 14 experienced case managers.
NATIONAL FRIENDLY RECRUITMENT
National Friendly, the friendly society and private medical insurance (PMI) provider, has confirmed it is re-branding as National Friendly from this month. The society has also said that three new senior team members have joined the company. Chris Meier has been recruited to the position of head of marketing and brand, while Glen Hutchinson has joined as head of national sales to build National Friendly’s position directly with corporate clients. Claire Templeton has taken on the role of head of ecommerce.

AXA PPP healthcare’s finance director, Andrew Coombs, has been appointed managing director of AXA PPP International. Coombs, a chartered accounted, worked for KPMG before joining AXA in 2005 where he served as group head of strategy and financial planning before becoming AXA PPP healthcare’s finance director in 2006. Chartered accountant Nicola Bell succeeds Coombs as AXA PPP healthcare finance director. Bell worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers prior to joining AXA in 2002.
SCOT PROV AND BRIGHT GREY SENIOR TEAM
Royal London has announced the senior management team responsible for the Scottish Provident and Bright Grey businesses, and the bancassurance relationship with Abbey. Headed by Ross Ainslie, the management team comprises Steve Streak as sales director, Gordon Watson as operations director, Roger Edwards as proposition director and Susan Sneddon as retail director. Streak will work closely with Andy Peters (pictured), who has been appointed national partnerships director for Royal London’s intermediary division. Edwards will oversee the pricing, product development and IFA marketing teams for both Bright Grey and Scottish Provident. Alison Turner-Holmes, currently marketing director with Scottish Provident, has decided to leave the Royal London Group in July.
